Cooling a megawatt-scale plug-and-play hydrogen fuel cell powerhouse

ENERGYS Australia has built an innovative power generation plant: a plug-and-play, megawatt-scale hydrogen fuel cell powerhouse as an alternative to conventional diesel engine systems.

The customer's requirement is to cool the plant's fuel cells.

The context

The megawatt powerhouse came online on 10 March 2023, at the Extreme E electric car rally in the remote desert province of Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. The event served as an ideal proving ground for the customer to demonstrate the rapid implementation and operation of the turnkey power system in a harsh and challenging environment.

To date, this plant is one of the few megawatt-scale hydrogen fuel cell power plants in operation internationally.

Plant specifications

This containerised plant has a very fast commissioning time: in just one day the system is operational and the fuel cells are producing electricity at full capacity.

Ostro dry coolers are used to cool the entire system, with a cooling capacity of approximately 2 MW.

Installed products

Two OSTRO dry coolers
Excellent aeraulics thanks to longitudinal and transverse airflow separation baffles.

Advantage obtained

Ostro dry coolers are machines that offer very high efficiency in terms of cooling capacity, thanks to the careful design of the air flows and the correct sizing of the coils. Our dry coolers fit in perfectly with the environmental friendliness of this plant, which is part of the customer’s overall Carbon Free philosophy.

ENERGYS Australia has developed a revolutionary power generation system: a plug-and-play, megawatt-scale hydrogen fuel cell powerhouse, a viable alternative to traditional diesel engine systems. This megawatt powerhouse is currently one of the few systems operating internationally. This modular, containerised system can be brought online in a single day, ensuring full energy production from the fuel cells. To ensure efficient cooling of the plant, our Ostro dry coolers are used, providing high cooling capacity through careful design and maximisation of performance. This solution fits perfectly with the customer’s Carbon Free philosophy and underlines their commitment to the environment.
