Air conditioning system for a 90-apartment building

Creating a high-efficiency air conditioning system for a 90-apartment building, with the added constraint of low maintenance. An impossible combination with traditional systems.

Storage description

The solution is an innovative air conditioning and domestic water heating system based on heat pumps. The entire system, including the heat pumps, is located in the central heating plant, situated in the garage area. The two dry coolers are instead located on the roof of the building, along with the photovoltaic system.

Storage informations

Four heat pumps produce a total of 60 kW of heat output, providing a heating temperature of 50°C and a cooling temperature of 18°C. The system has a low coolant charge and uses eg30% as a secondary fluid. The system operates 24 hours a day and, during the defrosting phase, does not interrupt the cycle because it uses a hot water tank.

Advantage obtained

With an external temperature of -7°C, the average daily energy consumption per apartment, considering domestic hot water, heating or air conditioning requirements, is only 6 kW.

This system is as efficient as a geothermal system, but costs half as much and requires much less maintenance. Unlike geothermal probes, which can only last five years due to water quality and are not always usable, this system has no such limitations. In addition, compared to traditional chillers, this system increases efficiency by 25%.

A new concept system that combines the advantages of traditional chillers and geothermal systems, avoiding the drawbacks of both solutions. The system is governed by a PLC that manages the power supply from 3 different sources: grid, photovoltaic plant, exchanger plates. The PLC instantly evaluates the instantaneous cost of the wattage and feeds the system from the cheapest source.
