Gas treatment plant for micro-liquefaction
In Morocco, a complex plant has been built for the purification of natural gas prior to its liquefaction (Micro LNG). The system also includes the removal of acidic gases - such as CO₂ - through the use of amines and a dedicated stripper. The customer turned to Stefani to face a complex technical challenge: dissipating 1.3 MW with an ambient temperature of 47°C in a single machine. The solution was a high-performance dry cooler from the OSTRO-L 90 series, with ATEX fans and AISI 304L steel coils.
Customer requirements
The customer needed to purify locally extracted natural gas to bring it to a liquid state (Micro LNG). A crucial stage in the process involves the removal of CO₂ and other acid gases through the use of regenerated amines in a closed circuit. The system, characterised by high thermal loads, requires a robust, reliable cooling system suitable for operation in a desert environment.
Description of the plant
The plant is dedicated to the treatment of natural gas for the production of Micro LNG. The process is based on the use of amines that, in their “lean” form, absorb CO₂ and other acidic gases present in the raw gas. Once the fluid has been “enriched” (rich amines), it is sent to a regeneration section where, through heating, the CO₂ is separated and the amines are returned to their initial state to be reused in the cycle.
This regeneration phase generates very high thermal loads, which must be continuously and efficiently dissipated to ensure the stability of the entire process. The presence of ammonia and other compounds also requires the use of corrosion-resistant materials and technical solutions suitable for potentially hazardous environments.
This is why the external cooling system is a key element: it had to be capable of dissipating over 1 MW of heat in extreme climatic conditions, with ambient temperatures reaching up to 47 °C, without compromising the reliability of the plant or the quality of the treated gas.
The technical solution by Stefani
For process cooling, a Stefani OSTRO-L 90 dry cooler was installed, a large machine with:

Advantages achieved
The customer achieved the required thermal output (1.3 MW) with a single machine, which also operates in extreme environmental conditions (up to 47 °C). Stefani was chosen not only for its performance, but also for its ability to create a customised machine that combines advanced engineering, special materials and exceptional dimensions. The dry cooler made it possible to save space and simplify integration into the existing system.
